The National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) in collaboration with Kano State Government through its Ministry of Education has held National quiz competition on legislation and democracy for Public Secondary Schools held at Kano State Library Complex.

Speaking while declaring the event open, the Director General, NILDS, National Assembly, Prof. Abubakar Sulaiman said the quiz competition is an initiative of the Institute as the first edition of the competition was
held in 2016 with participating schools drawn strictly within the Federal Capital Territory.

“The competition continued to be an annual event in that format until the Institute’s Governing Council headed by the President of Senate and Speaker of the House of Representatives directed that the
competition is expanded to the length and breadth of the country.

“This was successfully done in the year 2022 in collaboration with all the states of the Federation but with only 30 States participating. This 8th edition of the competition is therefore the second time the competition is held at the national level.”

He added that the broad objective of the competition is to provide continued education on the legislature and broaden the knowledge of students and youths on the history, practice and procedure of the legislature and encourage deeper understanding of civic and democratic governance.

“The competition will also stimulate the interest of the young students in politics and make them more proactive in matters relating to the
legislature and democracy.”

The DG urge all competing students and their teachers to
abide by the rules of the game in the true spirit of sportsmanship to avoid interference so that the desired objectives of the competition are achieved.

The State level competition gave way for the Zonal Level competition with participants from the seven states of the North West Zones. The winner of the North West Zone will be competing with other winners from other five zones at a later date in Abuja.

At the end of the competition, the 3rd Round, Katsina State had 15 points, Sokoto State had 15 points and lastly Zamfara State had 10 points.

With the above results, a special round to break the tie of Katsina State and Sokoto State to determine 1st and 2nd positions, Zamfara State had gotten the 3rd position.

Finally, Katsina emerged 1at position, Sokoto clinched 2nd position while Zamfara emerged 3rd Position.

With the results, Katsina State is to represent the North West at the Final Stage and Grand Finale of the 2023 NILDS National Quiz Competition in Abuja.
