Kano state office of Partnership for Learning for All in Nigeria (PLANE) has celebrated this year’s International Education Day (IED) with quiz competition for primary school pupils.

The pupils were exposed to paragraph reading, mathematics and other relevant subjects at Bichi, Minjibir, Gabasawa and Warawa local government areas.

The competition featured students, who were given text books to read paragraphs in Hausa, as well as questions in mathematics and other relevant subjects.

In his remarks, outreach officer PLANE Kano, Alhaji Yusuf Kabir explained that, the International Education Day, was set aside to showcase and enlighten the public on the roles to play in prioritizing education.

He said, the reading competition paved way for students to showcase their reading and mathematics talents, as well as encourage them to be good ambassadors, and utilize their talents as leaders of tomorrow.

The outreach officer noted that, FCDO designed the PLANE programme as a follow up to UK Government’s commitment, to global goals on education to improve access, by bringing girls back to school and enhance quality through making them learn, to read in primary and secondary schools.

“Educating a child is mandatory irrespective of gender or disability,” he said.

In his remarks, Kano state chairman School Based Management Committee (SBMC), Alhaji Tijjani Haladu Baraya decried over nonchalant attitude of some parents towards their children’s education.

He described lack of commitment by students, due to negligence by parents, as major setbacks to education despite support by government and development partners.

“Some parents do not support their children with learning materials in addition to absenteeism,” Baraya lamented.

PLANE is a seven-year education programme funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), to invest in a more inclusive and effective education system in Nigeria.

The project is being implemented in Bichi, Minjibir, Gabasawa and Warawa local government areas of Kano State.
